Bexhill & Hastings Observers (15/05/09): Callan Gains Gold In Newcastle

Ten-year-old Callan Hall travelled to Newcastle to represent the South East at the British Men's Set Work Championships.

Callan qualified for the national event back in March alongside boys from Maidstone and Crawley who joined him on the region's club level 2 team.

Callan performed his set routines on floor, pommels, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar as well as a strength and flexibility exercise.

His best score was 9.150 on vault as he finished with a total of 57.050 which placed him 36th out of the 59 national finalists at his level.

In the team competition the South East boys' effort was strong enough to crown them the 2009 club level 2 champions and Callan returned to the 1066 Gymnastics Academy very happy with a national gold medal.

Callan's personal coach Matthew Hart was in Newcastle to enjoy the moment with him. "I'm very pleased for him. We weren't expecting to qualify for finals and when he did we spent the last few weeks trying to tidy up the work so we could make a good contribution to the region's efforts.

"The six members of the team performed on each piece and the top four scores counted. Callan's vault, parallel bars and high bar scores were taken forward for the team total so he did his bit and we were all pleased to see the team finish first."

Callan, who attends St LEonards CoE School, is back training 16 hours a week at the Bexhill-based gymnastics club in preparation for further competitions.
