Hastings Observer (05/12/08): South East Team Gym Championships
A talented squad from the 1066 Gymnastics Academy is celebrating a surprise double success. The regional junior girls' contingent of Selena Georgiou-Paton, Gemma Morgan, Jasmine Clarke, Charlotte Whittaker, Keri Childs, Ellie Whiting and Laura Whiting claimed two silver medals at the South East Team Gym Championships at the K2 Leisure Centre in Crawley.
Wearing their new uniforms for the first time, the 1066 Twisters were first up to tumble and managed a decent score of 5.700. The recent acquisition of a team gym trampette helped their cause as they performed a clean run of somersaults and handspring vaults to score 6.850 before an impressive floor routine earned them a higher than anticipated 6.600. Their total score of 19.150 was good enough to propel them into second place in the regional competition. The girls were called to the rostrum again to claim a second set of silver medals - this time for finishing runners-up out of all the teams at their level in the open event which included British teams from outside the South East.
"I was so pleased for the girls", said proud coach Clare Clarke. "Until our new facilities are ready, we are without a gym so they have really been up against it. They had to work really hard to get to the competition. We came for the experience and really weren't expecting to medal!"
The girls are now looking forward to the qualification competition for the National Finals in the New Year when they will compete against teams from the South West, South and South East.
