Bexhill, Hastings & Battle Observers (05/03/10): Academy Gymnasts Take Pride From Great Display

Fifty gymnasts, coaches, parents and supporters from the 1066 Gymnastics Academy recently travelled to Bracknell for the 2010 Team Gym Southern Tournament.

Kicking off the weekend were the primary regional level boys who were participating in a micro event which saw them compete on tumble and trampette only. The '1066 Terrors' team consisting of Kyle Wilson, Ben Hilmer-Ewel and Jake Townsend rose to the challenge of their first team gym event with ease and finished in first position with a total score of 12.600. The boys are coached by Mark Poore.

The following day saw the club's two junior teams take to the arena to compete at national level. The '1066 Twisters' team was formed of Lucy Burton, Jasmine Clarke, Gemma Morgan, Danielle Sands, Ellie and Laura Whiting, Charlotte Whittaker and Alannah Wood. The girls started with their floor routine which earned them a slightly disappointing 5.700 despite a smooth performance. Their second rotation saw them take to the tumble track, the apparatus that presented them with problems at regional championships in November. The girls focused and enjoyed a confident and secure run of eighteen tumbles to walk away with 6.800. They then entered their final rotation, trampette, confident and ready to debut their new twisting somersaults and double rotation vaults from Ellie, Jasmine and Gemma. Only a few errors were made and the team were pleased with their score of 6.450. Their team total at the end of competition was 18.950 which was good enough for 9th place. The girls are coached by Clare Clarke who was happy to see her team compete at national level for the first time and successfully compete several new skills.

Head coach Matthew Hart's '1066 Troopers' team also competed at national level. Matthew Collins, Jack Cooper, Daniel Dinsdale, Luke Freeman, Sam Hammond, Nicholas Krystahl, Kasbian Rogers and Mike Varnham were competing for the second time as a team. They started out on tumble and seamlessly linked three flowing runs of flicks, somersaults, twists and rolls. The boys earned a score of 6.600. Luke did exceptionally well to work through an injury he acquired during the warm up on this piece. After a short break backstage to treat the injury Luke and his team mates were then called to perform on trampette. This was the boys' biggest piece involving an impressive six double rotation skills. The team enjoyed performing these new skills and were happy to walk away from trampette with a score of 6.150 and lots of support from the audience. The boys' last challenge was to concentrate on their floor routine. They managed good attention to detail and scored 5.600. Their total score was 18.350 which was enough to claim first place and a surprise victory over the current British champions in their category.

Hart said: "It was a fantastic weekend through and through. It was a lot of organising considering so many club members went along. We had to organise the travel, accommodation, a night out for everyone and that's all on top of getting nineteen gymnasts ready for the actual competition! I was thrilled for my team's win and so proud of the new skills the girls took out and happy to see the younger boys enjoy their first team gym experience. I'm very thankful to everyone who came and gave so much support to the teams. It all added up to a thoroughly enjoyable weekend, well worth the effort and a proud moment in the club's history."
