Bexhill & Hastings Observers (19/02/10): Academy Duo Qualify For National Tumbling Finals

Two gymnasts from the 1066 Gymnastics Academy have qualified for this year's National Tumbling Finals. Danielle Sands and Jake Townsend booked their places at Stoke-on-Trent in May after winning their categories at the South East regional competition staged at the K2 Centre, Crawley.

Danielle finished top of her group in the national 2 women's 13+ years group with a total of 78.500. Competing in the same category, Charlotte Whittaker came fifth after scoring 76.600.

Jake - the club's youngest competitor on the day - will also represent the South East at the nationals after finishing first in the national 2 men's 9/10 group. A very strong performance saw him total 79.400, the second highest score of the entrie event.

Sam Hammond produced three strong tumbles to finish second (75.700) - less than half a mark off qualification - in the national 2 men's 13+ years group.

Gemma Morgan also missed out by the narrowest of margins after claiming a silver medal and a score of 76.700 in the national 3 level in the women's 13+ years group.

Lucy Burton did well to finish third with a score of 73.400 at impressive elite 1 level in the women's 11/12 years group.

Academy coach Clare Clarke said: "The gymnasts all enjoyed a good event. It was great to see Danielle and Jake qualify for finals at the national 2 level after they ended sharing the regional title for this level back in November.

"They both work very hard in the gym. They were each presented with achievement awards by the club recently and Jake was named our gymnast of the year. These results demonstrate why."
