Bexhill & Hastings Observers (22/01/10): Academy Celebrates Year Of Achievement

More than 150 gymnasts, friends and family members celebrated the end of 1066 Gymnastics Academy's first full year with an awards evening.

The inaugural presentation night looked back at the last 12 months which has seen the Bexhill-based gymnastics club grow from a membership of just 20 to in excess of 400.

The club's highlights were played out on a large screen and coaches handed out awards to squad gymnasts in recognition of their efforts.

Development awards were presented to Hannah Turner, Freya Collard, Rhianna O'Farrell, Joshua Boreham, Lauren Jeanes, Samuel Clarke, Ellie Whiting and Jasmine Clarke. The gymnasts all train across a range of disciplines; team gym, trampolining, floor and vault, men's artistic and women's artistic, and they were rewarded for displaying and impressive amount of progress in their work.

Achievement awards went to Laura Whiting, Jake Townsend, Jack Cooper, Samantha Prince, Callan Hall and Danielle Sands for a series of fantastic results in competitions throughout their respective disciplines.

Head coach Matthew Hart also presented special awards including the Sticker Trophy which went to Gemma Morgan for collecting the most reward stickers across the entire year, reflecting the efforts of a very consistent gymnast.

He then recalled the words spoken by world champion gymnast Beth Tweddle when she officially opened the academy back in July. The Beth Tweddle Award was to be presented to the most determined gymnast and the popular recipient was young Willow Braisby for inspiring both gymnasts and coaches with her strong will and focus in training. Medals of recognition were presented to Josh Millard and Hall.

The final award of the evening saw Townsend named as the academy's first ever Gymnast of the Year for combining hard work in his training, good manners and top competition results. The award winners are based in Bexhill, Hastings, Battle, Brighton and Kent.
