Bexhill Observer (17/07/09): Beth Cuts Ribbon To Open New Gym
The 1066 Gymnastics Academy has been opened by world champion gymnast Beth Tweddle. Before cutting the ribbon on Saturday Beth was presented with a bouquet of flowers and spoke of her delight at opening the the 10,550sq ft gym in Brett Drive.
Beth said: "It's great to see a gym like this. It is fantastic and has amazing facilities."
Beth, 24, has amassed an impressive array of achievements and titles which include representing Great Britian at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and the 2008 Games in Beijing. Her talents on the Asymmetric Bars led to her becoming the World Champion in 2006 and at this year's European Championships Beth took the gold on Floor and Bars. She has been crowned the Women's British Champion seven consecutive times.
Beth, who started gymnastics at the age of seven, said: "This new gym is a great inspiration for kids and I'm sure there are many stars here today. I hope to see some of these stars at the 2016 Olympics - but you can't have the 2012 Olympics - that's my spot!"
After the opening ceremony 1066 Gymnastics Academy proprietor Matthew Hart and Beth announced there would be an annual award called the Beth Tweddle Award. Beth said: "To be a top gymnast you need to be determined and put everything into it. Therefore the award will be presented to the most determined gymnast."
Beth and guests were then treated to energetic displays by some of the club's gymnasts (aged between 4 and 15) which included floor, beam and parallel bars routines, training segments on bars, trampoline, tumble and rings and ended with a freestyle demonstration.
