BETH TWEDDLE OFFICIALLY OPENS THE CLUB
On Saturday 11 July 2009 the club welcomed British Gymnastics icon and two-time Olympian Beth Tweddle into the gym to officially open the facilities.
The day began with the chance for our squad gymnasts as well as competition winners from our General Gymnastics classes and local schools to have their picture taken with Beth. She then sat down with the children and answered a whole range of questions from them.
As Beth led the gymnasts in a warm up the gym was visited by camera crews from ITV and BBC. The children spent an hour training as Beth toured the gym, visiting each group in turn. She and the gymnasts also spent some time speaking with the news teams.
After a short break the gymnasts' friends, families and supporters arrived to form an audience of over 150. Club Manager Matthew Hart interviewed Beth and invited some of the children to repeat their questions to Beth from earlier over the microphone so Beth could share her answers with the audience.
The gymnasts then put on a fantastic show in two parts for the crowd and Beth which showcased the talent that's in the gym. The day closed with the chance for everyone to meet Beth personally for autographs and photos.
The audience enjoyed the show and took up the opportunity to buy plenty of raffle tickets, leotards and refreshments. Our thanks go to Beth Tweddle for making the day so special for everyone, the gymnasts and coaches for all their work into the display and all the parents, volunteers and sponsors who made the event possible. It was a fantastic way to official open the club. We were all thrilled to watch Beth go on to further her career by becomming World champion on Floor in London in October 2009 and then taking European gold on Floor and Bars in Birmingham in April 2010.
